Every thirty-nine minutes, someone in the United States is killed by a drunk driver. Drunk driving is a choice that destroys lives, families, and futures. That belief is at the center of who we are and why we exist.
The Alex Patafio Foundation was created to make sure fewer families ever have to face that
kind of loss. We are working toward a world where impaired driving no longer exists. We believe technology, accountability, and awareness can stop these crashes before they happen.
Alex’s Story
Alexandra “Alex” Patafio lived with purpose. She was in her third year at Georgia State
University College of Law. She spent her time helping families facing eviction, advocating for
children in need of legal protection, and pursuing a career in public service. Alex was a force of nature. She was brilliant, funny, and unafraid to speak up loudly for what was right.
Alex was killed by a drunk driver in October 2022. Her death was not an accident. It was the
result of a choice that could have been prevented. In the weeks and months that followed, her family, friends, and colleagues asked what could be done to stop more people from losing someone this way. The answer became a mission: to turn grief into action and protect others through change.
Our Mission
We founded the Alex Patafio Foundation in 2025 to reduce DUI-related fatalities through
advocacy, education, and collaboration. Our work is grounded in five strategic pillars that move prevention forward.
Legislative Change and Advocacy: Advocating for stronger DUI laws and judicial processes that hold offenders accountable.
Industry Engagement: Partnering with the alcohol, transportation, and technology industries to create safer systems.
Educational Development: Raising awareness about impaired driving and promoting actions that save lives.
Partnerships: Building relationships with community organizations, law enforcement, and advocates who share our goal of prevention.
Fundraising: Supporting research, outreach, and policy initiatives that bring these efforts to life.
Why Language Matters
Words shape how we understand responsibility in drunk driving crashes. When people
say “accident,” it sounds as though nothing could have stopped it. When we say “crash,” we acknowledge that decisions led to that moment. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 12,000 people are killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes each year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that millions more drive under the influence annually.
Changing how we talk about these crashes changes how we think about them. Accountability starts with awareness, and awareness starts with language.
Turning Awareness Into Action
Our work is national in scope and personal in meaning. We build partnerships that bring
prevention strategies into focus and push for stronger policies that save lives. Education is
central to that mission. We support programs that help drivers understand how one decision can change everything and encourage communities to make safety a shared value.
Each initiative, conversation, and policy effort moves us closer to prevention. Every action
honors Alex’s spirit of justice.
Alex’s Legacy
Alex believed in systems that work for people, not against them. She saw the law as a way to
build fairness and compassion into everyday life. That perspective drives our mission today. Her story reminds us that empathy and accountability can coexist, and that real change comes when people care enough to act.
We will never treat impaired driving as an unavoidable part of life. We will never call it an
accident. Our responsibility is to build awareness, strengthen prevention, and keep pushing until these tragedies are no longer possible.
